Many people will increase the temperature of their home if they’re cold. This essentially wastes large amounts of energy from the heat that escapes the home. Unfortunately, the issue is that many people simply have no idea where the heat is escaping in their house. While you may be able to feel a draft of uncomfortably cold air passing through a window, the majority of heat loss occurs in less visible areas in the home. Heat loss through walls generally occurs through conduction or physical contact, as the walls of a home are in physical contact with the colder temperatures outside. The energy inside your house is essentially transferred by conduction through the walls. Unfortunately, for homes that were built with poor wall insulation, it can be an expensive remodeling job.
Basement and Walls
Foundation walls for a basement and the cement slab, which sits underneath the floors of your home, have poor insulation capabilities. Most houses, however, have little to no insulation in the floors of a home making this a major source of heat loss.
How air rises, and because of that, much of the heat that we lose in out homes escapes through the attic. Cracks or holes in an attic, along with improperly places vents, allow for much heat loss through the attic space.
Windows and Doors
This is mostly due to air leaks and cracks around the founation that can be simply repaired through regularly caulking around window and door frames. These windows have three pieces of glass separated by about 1/3 of an inch which serves as natural insulation to help reduce heat loss through windows.
